Interline e-tickets

An e-ticket is a virtual, paperless ticket for general use. They are stored in a database rather than printed and distributed to a customer in a paper format.  Interline e-ticket enables a passenger to use e-ticket on an interline journey where more than one carrier is involved in the itinerary.  For example, Glasgow – London Heathrow – Vancouver where the first sector of the journey is operated by bmi and the second is operated by Air Canada
Computer messaging is used to send the information between the other carriers in the itinerary.

As of June 1, 2008 IATA regulations state that wherever possible all bookings must be e-ticketed for details click here

Here are some simple guidelines to follow:
If all segments in a booking are "booked" (does not have to be "operated") with any of the above carrier codes flight number and the "E" indicator is next to all segments then an e-ticket can be issued.

Guide to interline e-ticketing
If any other carrier's flight is booked then a paper ticket must be issued.
If all segments are with any of the above carrier codes but one or more segments does not have the "E" indicator then again a paper ticket must be issued.

You may see other airlines segments with an E indicator in a PNR, but if the airline is not in the above list it will have to be a paper ticket.
Other rules for interline e-ticket:

  1. No name changes at all.
  2. IET tickets cannot be revalidated, they can only be reissued.
  3. No industry discount (ID) tickets. With LO, NZ, BA, VS, BE, LX and AC we can now issue DUTY travel ID e-tickets

Note:

  • Frequent flyer redemption tickets can be issued as interline e-tickets. Same rules apply.
  • Tickets with open segments can be issued. Most partners require min 1 confirmed segment. BA and VS do not. Customer requires the ticket number.
  • e-ticket with passive segments. Ticket number must be added to PNR where space is held.
  • Group bookings  - e-ticket to be issued in batches of 9
